What is Vowel Harmony?
Vowel harmony is one of the most important features of Azerbaijani. It means that vowels in a word must "harmonize" or belong to the same group.
Two Vowel Groups
Front vowels: Ι, e, i, ΓΆ, ΓΌ
Back vowels: a, Δ±, o, u
How It Works
When you add a suffix to a word, the vowel in the suffix must match the last vowel of the root word:
- Ev (house) + lΙr = EvlΙr (houses) - front vowels
- Ata (father) + lar = Atalar (fathers) - back vowels
- GΓΆz (eye) + lΙr = GΓΆzlΙr (eyes) - front vowels
Why It Matters
Understanding vowel harmony will help you:
- Pronounce words correctly
- Form plurals properly
- Conjugate verbs accurately
- Add suffixes without mistakes
Practice makes perfect! Try adding suffixes to different words to see how vowel harmony works.
